I'm not asking which filesystem is "better", I just want to maximize the spectrum of systems I can use my USB drive with, without having to install drivers or update the OS. Regardless of whether the drive was formatted with a Windows PC or a Mac you’ll now be able to use it. 6 Click Start and wait for the formatting process to complete.

I'm not interested in performance/security/fault tolerance or other such features, just portability. 3 Right-click on the drive you wish to format. Unlike this question, I can't accept the 4GB file limit. that can open the GMMP files on each platforms such as Windows, Mac, iOS. So, in this day and age, and for the OSes I mentioned (perhaps even others) - which filesystem should I choose? My current best guess is NTFS, since I know the Linux support is decent (or better) and for Windows it's native. File extension GMMP is used by operating systems to recognize files with. When formatting or erasing a volume with Disk Utility, youll see a format menu. Now you know which partitioning map is which, the next time you insert an external drive or want to partition the built-in storage disk of the Mac, it will be easier to choose between the available options. NTFS is also similarly easily ruled out as without custom software, Macs can read from, but can't write to, NTFS formatted drives. It is currently used for Windows partitions formatted as MS-DOS (FAT) or ExFAT. In the olden days I would probably use FAT32, which I remember to be quite widely supported - but that has a 4GB file limit. The first thing we can easily do is rule out using HFS/+ - this is a Mac only format and requires, at best, custom software to read on other platforms.

I'm formatting (a single partition on) my USB drive, for read-write use on multiple computers - at the very least Windows (XP and up), Mac OS (not sure which versions) and Linux (distributions which are no more than, say, 4 years old). Box Drive is natively integrated into Mac Finder and Windows Explorer.
